Arthurs father remarried in to Rose Ellen Stapleton in June 1901. Arthur lived in 1911 with his family at 20 Armley Park Road Occupation Railway Telegraphist. He arrived in Halifax Nova Scotia between 1911 and 1915. Enlisted Winnipeg 22/07/1915 Aged 23 years. Next of Kin details were his Father who lived at 5 Nunnington Terrace Armley. Occupation Station Agent. Arthur was described as being 5ft 7 inches tall dark complexion brown hair, brown eyes with a chest size of 36 inches. Religion Methodist. Arrived Halifax Nova Scotia 23/03/1912 on board the Victorian. "Arthur was Killed during the second attack on a German earthwork called Regina Trench. 43rd Bn were in trenches R.23.b.1.5 to R 24.s Sheet 57. d.s.e." Laid to Rest Regina Trench Cemetery Grandcourt Somme France. APPLEBY Norman Lieutenant 79359 31st Battalion Canadian Infantry 29/03/1917 Aged 27.Military Medal and Military Medal Bar. Born Leeds 05/12/1887. Son of John Born Strines Marple Derbyshire 1853 and Mary Amelia Born Manchester 1851. Landed Quebec on board Empress of Britain 09/05/1913 from Liverpool. Enlisted Lethbridge Alberta Canada 18/11/1914 Aged 27 years and 2 months old Occupation labourer he was 5ft 8 1/2 inches tall with fair hair and blue eyes. He won his MM and MM Bar whilst serving has a Sergeant. Harrogate Herald 4th April 1917 "Mr & Mrs John Appleby, Glen Roy, East Parade, Harrogate, have had intimation that their son, Lieutenant Norman Appleby, of the Canadians, is reported missing as from March 29th. Lieutenant Appleby, it will be remembered, played three-quarters back for the Harrogate Old Boys, before emigrating to Canada. He obtained his commission some four months since and was hopefully looking forward to further usefulness in his country's cause."

Harrogate Herald 11th April 1917 "Lieutenant Norman Appleby, son of Mr & Mrs John Appleby, of Glen Roy, East Parade, Harrogate, who was reported missing in our last issue, has been killed in action. During an operation on the enemy trenches on 29th March he was killed instantly, and died without pain. The success of the operation was due largely to the determined and gallant way in which he carried out his work. His conduct inspired those under him, and his loss to the whole battalion is keenly felt.

ATKINSON Robert Philip Private 177103 1st Battalion Canadian Infantry Western Ontario Regiment 23/09/1916 Aged 17. Born Leeds 1899. Son of Thomas Born Leeds 1860 and Mary Born Leeds 1862. Enlisted Montreal Canada 05/10/1915. On Roberts attistation papers he lied about his age saying he was born on the 5th of August 1895 which would have made him 20 years old. He was infact born 05/08/1899 making him just 16 years old, three years under the official age to enlist. Robert was 5 Feet 4 half inches tall with a fair complexion blue eyes and auborn hair, a chest size of 35 inches and a scar under his right nipple. Robert's brother Arthur Ernest enlisted in Montreal in October 1914 into the 24th Bn Canadian Regiment. CWGC 54 New Church Place Burmantofts. KIA Courcelette. Remembered Vimy Memorial France.

ATKINSON William Private 420132 B Company 16th Bn Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) 18/04/1916 AGED 27.Born Leeds 02/09/1889. Son of William and Anna. Husband of Florence Smith Married St Mary the Virgin Hunslet 1903. CWGC 210 College Street St James Winnipeg Manitoba. Enlisted Winnipeg Canada 08/12/1914 Occupation steamfitter Residence 374 Ferry Road Manitoba, described as being 5ft 8 half inches tall of fresh complexion blue eyes and sandy coloured hair. I believe his age on the CWGC site is wrong should be 27 or 28 not 38. "Whilst on sentry duty William was shot through the head by a sniper at dusk. He was killed instantly."

Son of Alfred Born Leeds 1856 and Lydia D Brook Born Leeds 1861 Married 1879 St George Leeds. Enlisted Winnipeg Canada 21/07/1915. Attestation papers describe Herbert as being 5ft 3 inches tall, having a Fair Complexion, Blue eyes and Brown hair. Died London Hospital Epsom. Wife resident at 16 Banstead Grove Roundhay Road Harehills. Laid to Rest Grave 1173 Leeds General Cemetery Woodhouse Lane Leeds. Remembered on Screen Wall Lawnswood Cemetery Leeds England.

BALDWIN Edward Serjeant 83629 4th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery KIA 04/03/1918 Aged 26. Born 02/11/1891 Son of John Died 1916 Aged 49 and Mary Dowson Married 1888 St Lukes Leeds. Husband of Nelly 23 Mc Michael Avenue Toronto. Edward lost brothers Herbert 2nd Bn Shropshire Light Infantry 21/05/1916 and William 1/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment  John who was serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps survived the war passing away in 1962.

Landed Canada 1912. Enlisted 10/11/1914 Toronto Described as being 5ft 9 tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and Blonde hair. Landed Halifax Nova Scotia 1911. Enlisted 02/06/1915 Winnipeg Described as being 6ft 2 tall with a Dark complexion Brown eyes and Brown hair. CWGC 19 Hovingham Terrace Harehills Leeds. "Reported Severely wounded by one of our own shells during military operations at Passchendaele His wounds were dressed by a stretcher bearer, but he died an hour later after being unconscious from the time he was hit."

Enlisted Canada. Residence 1916 22 Qu'Appelle Water Street Saskatchewan. The 5th Bn was North of Arleux-en-Gohelle when Harry was KIA. Remembered Vimy Memorial France.

Son of Samual William Born Liverpool 1864 and Charlotte Hutton Born Armley Leeds 1864 Married St Mathias Burley 1885. Enlisted Toronto 06/08/1915. KIA Attacking Regina Trench Somme. Remembered Vimy Memorial France. 28/11/1916 Toronto Star Newspaper gave details of Henry's passing.

BOYD Thomas Ripley Gunner 42445 3rd Bde Canadian Field Artillery KIA 21/04/1916 Aged 33 Leeds Modern:1894-1896. Born Holbeck 05/05/1883. Son of Thomas a cloth finisher and embosser Born Leeds 1844 and Sarah Ann Sykes Born Leeds 1850 Married 1869 St Andrew Leeds. After leaving Leeds Boys Modern Thomas emigrated to Toronto Canada in 1904 and started a business as a plasterer in the firm of Boyd and Colisham.  03/09/1914 Thomas enlisted into the Canadian expeditionary Force at Valcartier 16 km from Quebec in Canada joining the 9th Battery Canadian Field Artillery having previousley served for three years in the Boar war. At his medical Thomas is described as being 5ft 7 inches tall, with a dark complexion black hair Grey eyes with a chest size of 37 inches. Thomas arrived in England in November 1914 and after training was sent to France in February 1915. He fought at Ieper and Festhubert and it was said that he fired the first shot at Neuve Chapelle. Recommended three times for honours for as what was described as,"faithfull and Gallent service" It was reported Thomas was Instantaneously Killed by a German shell near Poperinghe Belgium. He left £683.00 pounds in his will. Remembered Beeston Wesleyan Church. Leeds Boys Modern and Metropolitan United Church  56 Queen Street East Toronto Ontario Canada.

Enlisted Valeartier Quebeck 09/09/1914 Described as being 5ft 9inch tall dark complexion grey eyes dark brown hair. CWGC 61 Kirkstall Avenue Leeds. 23/12/1919 Ernest was Exhumed 3/4 mile north of Pozieres and Laid to Rest Villers Courcelette British Cemetery France.

There is an Alfred James Born 1890 in Bradford, he gave details of a brother William living in Manchester when he enlisted, and in the 1901 census a William and Alfred are residing in Bradford. Arrived in Canada 1913. Enlisted Enco Ontario 02/02/1916. The 44th Bn was in action in Passchendaele area when John gave his life. CWGC 113 Cross Green Lane Leeds. Born Leeds 16/09/1876. Son of William J Born Leeds 1851 and Agnes Cole Born Leeds 1858. Husband of Mary Maud Collis Born Leeds 1880 Married Leeds St Augustine 1910. Enlisted Calgary 30/04/1915. CWGC 20 Burley Street Leeds. 1911 23 West End Terrace Hyde Park Occupation Chimney Sweeper. Reported to have been killed in the area of Courcelette at night by an enemy shell during an heavy bombardment. Remembered Vimy Memorial France.

Son of Rhodes Kennedy Born Leeds 1858 and Rose Cullen Born Shardlow 1862 Married Nottingham 1886 CWGC of Charnwood Far Headingley Leeds. Enlisted Valcartier 23/09/1914. Johns brother Captain Reginald Cullen gave his life 15/07/1916 fighting with C Company 7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Aged 28 and lies at peace at Puchevillers British Cemetery Somme France. The 13th Bn was in area around St Julien at time of Johns death. John is Remembered Ypres Menin Gate Belgium. John is also Remembered on the Imperial Tabacco of Canada Limited. and St Chads Headingley.

Son of Joseph Born Leeds 1847 and Mary Born Leeds 1850 Married Leeds. CWGC 28 Tramway Street Leeds. Enlisted Edmonton 12/07/1915. Laid to Rest Villers Station Cemetery Villers-Au-Bois France. Ernest was remembered in a local newspaper at the time he gave his life.

CATLEY Edward Private 454056 B Company 2nd Bn Canadian Infantry Eastern Ontario Regiment KIA 04/05/1917 Aged 23. Born Leeds 13/12/1896. Son of Frederick James Born Leeds 1857 and Ellen Wrathall  Married Leeds 1883. Landed Quebec 16/06/1911. Enlisted Lindsay Toronto 08/06/1915. The 2nd Bn was in Vicinity of Fresnoy when Edward gave his life. Mother Ellen resided 1927 at 28 Tramway Street Chapletown Road. Remembered Vimy Memorial France. Edward was remembered in a local newspaper at the time he gave his life.

CHADWICK Louis (Lewes) Private 54150 18th Bn Canadian Infantry Western Ontario Regiment KIA 15/09/1916 Aged Born Bramley Leeds 21/01/1879. Son of William Born Baildon 1855 and Ann Jane Driver Born Leeds 1856. Married Leeds 1876. CWGC of 10 Church Road Armley Leeds. 1901 census Louis is shown as living at Wellington Barracks London. Landed Quebec 1911. Enlisted Canada 16/12/1914 On his Attestation papers he served three years in the Scots Guards. It could be a resided in a French speaking part of Canada and used the name Louis as he was christened Lewes. Reported to have been buried at Martinpuich Somme M.31.b.3.6. Remembered Vimy Memorial France.

CLARK Benjamin Private 234071 44th Bn Canadian Infantry 12/05/1917 DOW Aged 23. Born Hull 30/05/1894. Son of George and Ada Cox Married 1893 St Mary the Virgin Hunslet. 1901 Resided Hunslet. Enlisted Saskatoon 1916. Reported During an attack on enemy positions on 09/05/1917 was wounded in back by shrapnel. After receiving attention he was taken to No 6 Casualty Clearing station where he succumbed to his wounds three days later. 1921 details sent to father at 521 Avenue 1 South Saskatoon Canada. photo of Grave taken 21/01/1921. Laid to Rest Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension France.

"Last seen at the jumping off trench in front and to the right of Bois De Vert Wood Since then no information has been reported of him." Remembered Vimy Memorial France.

Previously served Middlesex Regiment and Kings Royal Rifles. 16th Bn relieved from trenches at Courcelette to Warloy at time of George gave his life. Remembered Vimy Memorial.
