 Headingley Methodist Church can be found on Chapel Street off Otley Road. Built in 1845. The following photographs are reproduced by kind permission of My Methodist History a website dedicated to sharing the family history of the Methodist Church. Dedicated and unveiled Sunday 23rd October 1921 by the Reverend Frank Boynton.

BRUCE George Leighton Gunner 2713 Royal Field Artillery KIA 12/07/1916 Aged 19. Born 29/03/1897 Leeds. Son of George and Elizabeth Hislop Buchanan Married 1895 Leeds Registered Building CWGC 11 Wilton Grove Headingley. Laid to Rest Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension France.

CAMPBELL William Archibald Lieutenant 10 Squadron Royal Flying Corps KIA 21/09/1917 Aged 19. Born 1898 Knaresborough. Son of Duncan Archibald and Jeannie Fenton Fulton 1911 38 Cardigan Lodge Cardigan Road Headingley CWGC Grosvenor House Headingley. Enlisted to 1/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment. Will to father described as a Wholesale Clothing Manufacturer of £206,3s. 2d. Also Remembered Headingley War Memorial.

 Laid to Rest Chocques Military Cemetery France.


GUDGEON Alfred Rifleman 2367 1/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 07/08/1915 Aged 36. Born Headingley 1879. Son of William and Martha Harrison. Husband of Caroline Burnett Married 1902 St Chad Far Headingley. Remembered Ypres Menin Gate Memorial Belgium.

MITCHELL Arthur Richard Private 62094 2nd Bn Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry KIA 30/08/1918 Aged 19. Son of Walter Richard and Ellen Florence Kemp Married 1894. 1911 27 Monkbridge Street Meanwood. Laid to Rest Assevillers New British Cemetery France.

MITCHELL Rowland Lance Corporal 263113 2/4th Bn Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry DOW 27/09/1918 Aged 22.  Awarded Military Medal. Laid to Rest Grevillers British Cemetery France. 

RIGBY Arthur George Captain 8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 12/10/1917 Aged 24. Awarded Military Cross.  Born 1893 Colombo Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Son of Reverend W H 25 Victoria Street Tenby Wales. 1911 8 Richmond Road Headingley at Leeds Grammer School. Landed France 16/04/1915.

SAVAGE Norman Gunner 94146 19th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery KIA 30/10/1918 Aged 38. Son of George and Mary Ann Husband of Mary Jane Welch Married 1904 Caistor Lincolnshire. CWGC 15 Ash View Headingley. 1911 92 Royal Park Road Headingley Brick Dealer. Laid to Rest Le Cateau Military Cemetery France.

SINGLETON John 476023 Staff Serjeant Canadian Ordnance Corps 02/09/1918 Aged 30.

Born Headingley 15/01/1888. Only son of Wilson and Mary Elizabeth Kerfoot Married 1880. Mother in 1932 40 Cardigan Road Headingley. Enlisted Saskatoon 19/07/1915 Occupation Electrical Engineer. Was laid to rest on the Right of Arras to Cambrai Road going towards Vimy Village exhumed and moved to Drury Crucifix.

SUNDERLAND Herbert William Private 15/864 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 31.Born Leeds 1884. Son of William and Mary Bannister Married 1876 St Stephen Kirkstall 1911/CWGC 14 Hyde Park Terrace. Enlisted Leeds Town Hall trained at Colsterdale went to Egypt 22/12/1915.

WATSON Mark Sanderson 2nd Lieutenant 4th Bn Highland Light Infantry KIA 11/01/1917 Aged 21. Born Chester 145/05/1895. Son of Reverend Richard William Minister of Headingley Wesleyan Church and Isabella Sanderson Married 1894 Cockermouth. Remembered Basra War Memorial Iraq.

WHITEHEAD John Sydney Private 15/960 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 20. Son of Harry and Emily Jane Scott Married 1886 CWGC Alfred Street Boar Lane. 1911 48 Victoria Road Headingley Engineer in a Printers. Remembered Thiepval Memorial Somme France.
