His brother Norman Sholto learned to fly in 1914 at Bristol and served in the Royal Naval Air Service aboard HMS Ark Royal landing at Gallipoli 1915. Laid to Rest Ramleh War Cemetery Israel.

WHITAKER Gilbert Captain Indian Defence Force Died Namtu Burma 19/12/1918 Aged 34. Born 16/05/1884 Leeds.. Son of Fred Hamilton and Annie Backhouse Atkinson. Husband of Zaira Mattevitch Married Georgia 1913. Their Daughter Mafalda Selena a nurse with Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Drowned on Board SS Khedive Ismail 12/02/1944.Torpedoed by Japanese Submarine I27. She was part of a convoy when attacked and sank in three minutes. Many survivers were killed when the submarine positioned itself under the survivors. HMS Palidin took the decision that the subamarine had to be destroyed to protect the rest of the convoy. two and a half hours later the submarine was sunk. in total 1,220 men and 77 women from Khedive Ismail were lost many who had survived the initial attack. Unknown where Gilbert was Laid to Rest.
