Meynal Street Methodist Church Kirkstall 

Meynal Street Methodist Church was just off Kirkstall Road and when it closed in 1938 the War Memorial was placed in Burley Road Methodist Church which itself closed in 2012. The following photographs are reproduced by kind permission of My Methodist History a website dedicated to sharing the family history of the Methodist Church. BUXTON Frank Lance Corporal 10936 10th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 01/06/1917 Aged 24. Son of Fred and Clara Senior Married 1886 St Mathias Burley. Laid to Rest Fricourt Military Cemetery Somme France.

CAWTHERAY William Private 21407 1/4th kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry KIA 04/10/1915 Aged 16. Born 1898 Leeds. Son of William and Emma Tyreman Married 1884. Emma Remarried 1900 to Richard Pontefract Leeds Registered Building CWGC No  9 Kennedy Street Kirkstall Road. 1911 at School 33 Meynall Street with his brother James Henry and Uncle James Bull. Remembered Ypres Menin Gate Memorial Belgium.

MENNELL Thomas Bombardier 745864 A Battery 165th Brigade Royal Field Artillery DIED 13/10/1918 Aged 30. Born Leeds Enlisted Manchester. Son of Francis and Margaret Wardle Married 1887 St Peter with St Cuthbert Hunslet. Husband of Helen S Williams Married 1911 Woodhouse Moor Methodist Church Hyde Park Road. CWGC 31 Kennedy Street Kirkstall Road. Laid to Rest Arneke British Cemetery France. 

MIDGLEY Edward Driver 82170(6) D Battery 64th Brigade Royal Field Artillery DOW 06/01/1917 Aged 18. Born Leeds 1899. Son of Edward and Jane Ann Ackroyd Married 1895 St Andrew Leeds 1911 19 Maynell Street Kirkstall Road. Laid to Rest Avesnes-Le-Comte Communal Cemetery Extension France.

SWIFT Allen Witty 15/868 1/5th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 20/07/1918 Aged 30. Born 1888 Burley. Son of Robert and Eliza Hayes Married 1888 St Mathias Burley. Enlisted Leeds Pals Landed Egypt 22/12/1915. Residence 1911 No 58 Lloyd Street Burley Road.

SUGDEN Norman Private 2488 A Company 56th Bn Australian Infantry DOW 21/09/1918 Aged 26. Born 1892 Cleckheaton. Son of Benjamin Jowett B and Lavinia Grimshaw Married St Michael Buslingthorpe 1888. No 107 Cardigan Road Headingley. Husband of Florrie Mennell Married Methodist Church Cardigan Lane Burley 02/03/1918 CWGC 47 Burley Lodge Road Leeds. Enlisted Sydney 03/04/1916. Left Sydney onboard HMAT Aeneas 30/09/1916 Occupation Labourer. Red cross witness reported seeing Norman watching a 10 pounder firing when an enemy shell landed and Norman was hit by shrapnel. Admitted to 12 General Hospital Rouen  09/09/1918  Photos of Normans Grave were sent to Florrie in Leeds. As far as i am aware she never remarried and passed away in Leeds in 1971. DOW to Chest and thigh 08.30 am. Laid to Rest 22/09/1018 St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen France. Inscription: Christ Shall Clasp The Broken Chain Closer When We Meet Again" Australian War Memorial Canberra Panel 163.  RED CROSS STATEMENTS
