ROYAL FLYING CORPS

The following section remembers the 24 men from Leeds who gave their lives whilst serving in the Royal Flying Corps in World War One.

ANGUS John Edwin Airman 2nd Class 47406 Salonika Air-Craft Park 28/07/1917 Aged 26. Born Leeds 1891. Son of William Henry and Anna Maria Phillips Married St MatthewChurch Little London 1887. CWGC Molyneaux Street Chorlton-on-Medlock Manchester. Laid to Rest Mikra British Cemetery Kalamaria Salonica Greece.

BOWMAN William Powell Lieutenant 11th Squadron (West Yorkshire Regiment) 17/10/1916 Aged 22. Born Leeds 21/10/1894  Baptised 24/11/1894 Holy Trinity Church Leeds. Son of William Powell and Mary Grace Glendinning Married 1893 St Michael Church Headingley. Enlisted into 19th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment. Pilots Certificate attained at Ruislip flying a Maurice Farman Biplane 24/05/1916 residence shown as North Grange Road Headingley. CWGC Leafield King Lane Moortown. Enlisted in the Royal Engineers as a dispatch rider. Joined the 15th BN West Yorkshire Regiment after attaining his commission before joining the RFC as an observer, going to Francie in July 1917.

Brother's details. (BOWMAN Geoffrey Glendinning Flight Sub-Lieutenant Royal Naval Air Service KIA 10/10/1917 Aged 19. Born Leeds 11/03/1898. Brother of William Powell mentioned above. Pilots Certificate attained at Chingford flying a Maurice Farman Biplane 07/12/1916.)

 William was laid to rest alongside his co pilot 2nd LT George Clayton Aged 23 who was from Bradford at Bullecourt Churchyard. on 19/05/1924 both were exhumed it was reported that the Germans had placed the remains in a coffin and the bodies were shattered to pieces and badly burned. There was no way of recognising either man only fragments of trousers and buttons were found.

BOYES Herbert Arthur Airman 2nd Class 42524 DIED 31/03//1917 Vol 2c Page 230 Aged 32. Born York 1885. Son of Arthur and Maria Hitchin Married York 1880. Husband of Beatrice Annie Buckle Married York 1910 Vol 9d Page 45. CWGC 18 Alma Street Beckett Street. Laid To Rest Reading Cemetery.

BRAYSHAW William Stead Captain 45th Squadron 06/04/1917 Aged 29. Born Birmingham 29/04/1887 Baptised St James Church New York Place Leeds 04/12/1887. Son of Arthur Edwin and Elizabeth CWGC Hill Hook House Clarence Road Sutton Coldfield and Sheaf House Headingley. William was identified by his officers clothing and his identity disc. Originally laid to rest Froyennes German Cemetery Grave 249 near to his observer 2nd Lieutenant Colin St George Campbell in grave 241 Campbell was from Toronto Canada. 27/08/1928 both men were finally Laid to Rest Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension Belgium.

BURN Douglas Airman 2nd Class 42nd Aquadron 25160 Died Bradford 24/11/1917 Aged 26. Born Headingley 15/03/1891 Baptised St Michaels Headingley 27/05/1891. Son of William a watchmaker and Esmea Swann Married 1890. CWGC 43, Otley Road Headingley. Laid to Rest Lawnswood Cemetery.

BUTLER Sidney George Airman 2nd Class 6242 30th Squadron Died 10/08/1916 Aged 22. Born Leeds 1895. Son of Frank and Maud Mountain L Married 1890 St George Leeds. CWGC 25 Court Road Barry South Wales. Laid to Rest Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery Iraq.

CAMPBELL Willliam Archibald Lieutenant 10th Squadron (1/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment) DOW 21/09/1917 Aged 20. Born Knaresbrough 1897.  Son of Duncan Archibald and Jeannie Fenton CWGC Grosvenor House Headingley. Enlisted into the 7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment in September 1914. Went to France in November 1915 and was commissioned in May 1917 into the RFC. It was reported see below that William was with his pilot  2nd Lieutenant Edward Armstrong Bernard Aged 21 from Cheltenham when they engaged five enemy planes his pilot was killed and William attempted to land the plane him self.

CHAPMAN Horace Airman 2nd Class 43942 40th Squadron Died 22/07/1917 Aged 30. Born Leeds 21/09/1886. Son of Thomas a Solicitor and Laura Wood Married 1875 St Matthew Church Little London. CWGC Clifton Bank 140 Chapeltown Road. Educated Leeds Grammer School. Occupation sole solicitor of Dawson and Chapman Solicitors. Enlisted 17/08/1916 Died from Ceribro-Spinal Meningitis in St Omar Hospital. Laid to Rest Longuenesse St Omer Souvenir Cemetery France. PHOTO De Givneys

CLARK George Airman 2nd Class 32897 56th Kite Balloon Section 31/12/1917 Aged 26. Born Leeds Son of George and Elizabeth  Husband of May Hodgson (formerly Clark) CWGC  4 John Edward Street Wellington Road Leeds. Alexandria Hadra War Memorial Cemetery Egypt.

CORNFORTH Norman Leslie Second Lieutenant 2nd Squadron 18/01/1918 Aged 28. Born Hebden Bridge 1889. Baptised St James Hebden Bridge 02/12/1889. Son of Alfred and Isabel  Husband of Ethel Glew Married Richmond Upon Thames London 1916 CWGC 29 Brudenell Avenue Hyde Park. Enlisted into Royal Field Artillery 662 Landed France 29/09/1916 Commissioned 12/08/1917.

DUMON Sidney Airman 2nd Class 34555 42nd Squadron 12/10/196 Aged 22. Born Liverpool 1894. Son of Thomas and Emma Gonsalves Married Lambeth 1886. CWGC 22 Tonbridge Road Leeds. Laid to Rest Merville Communal Cemetery Extension France.

HARGREAVES Harry Air Mechanic 3rd Class 82192 DIED 11/06/1917 Aged 18. Born Hunslet 1899. Son of Samuel and Sarah Harrison Married 26/03/1898 St Silas Hunslet 1911 No 21 Monkton St Dewsbury Road.

HORNER Karl Christian Captain (7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment) DOW 04/04/1917 Aged 20. Born Leeds 1897. Baptised St Georges Leeds 27/02/1898. Only Son of Charles Robert and Isabel Mary Lendrum Married 1893 Kilroon Cork Ireland. CWGC 18 Monkbridge Road Headingley. Enlisted 30/10/1914 into Royal Army Medical Corps 48. Commissioned into West Yorkshire Regiment 16/07/1915. Also Remembered St Chads Far Headingley.

KAY Stanley Burnett Captain (7th Bn Yorkshire Regiment) DIED 28/01/1918 Aged 26. Born Leeds 1892. Baptised 19/06/1892 Wrangthorn St Augustine Hyde Park Corner. Son of Stanley Robert Born derby Occupation Mining & Civil Engineer and Hetty Tidswell Married 1891 Wrangthorn St Augustine Hyde Park Corner CWGC High Mead Wood Lane Headingley. 1911 ResdenceClub Nook Barden Bolton Abbey Occupation Mining Engneer. His father applied for hs medals including 1914-15 Star in 1919. Laid to Rest Lawnswood Cemetery.

KELLETT William Second Lieutenant 10th Squadron (8th Bn Somerset Light Infantry) 22/01/1917 Aged 30. Born Bradford 25/12/1887. Baptised 12/03/1891 St Agnes Church Burmantofts  Leeds.  Son of Frederick and Hannah Eliza Parkinson Married Bradford 1887. Husband of Lovina Gertrude Cornforth Married 1907.

KILLION Thomas Airman 2nd Class 47213 No1 Training Depot Stamford DIED 11/10/1917 Aged 19.  Born Leeds 1898 Twin with Agnes. Son of Peter and Ann Cuff Married 1878 at Leeds Registered Building. CWGC 20 Warder Street New Wortley. Laid to Rest Leeds Roman Catholic Cemetery.

MACPHERSON Henry Douglas Second Lieutenant 29th Squadron KIA 14/10/1917 Aged 19.  Born Leeds 1898. Son of Henry and Lily Hallewell Married Dover 1894. CWGC Residence Ghyllas Sedbergh. 1901 Residence 3 Moorland Road Leeds. Shot down over Ypres Trenches.

MYERS Tom Private 1016017 39th Balloon Section KIA 17/1/1917 Aged 38. Born Armley 1879. Son of Joseph and Clara Malkin Married 1878 Holy Trinity Armley Hall. Husband of Mary Alice Whiteley Married 26/12/1907 at St Bartholomew Armley. CWGC 21 Hope Mount Armley.

Laid to Rest New Irish Farm Cemetery Belgium.

RALPHS Arthur Second Lieutenant 12th Squadron KIA 23/04/1917 Aged 23. Born Leeds 25/02/1894. Baptised 09/11/1899 at St Aidens Church. Son of Andrew Thomas and Elizabeth Helen Nokes Married Leicester 1883. CWGC Fearnville House Roundhay. Enlisted into Royal Field Artillery as a Corporal 990 then Sergeant 995 before joining RFC in 25/01/1916. Landed in France 05/03/1915. In november 1917 In London his His effects were valued at £313 16 1d. His brother George C  collected his medals in 1921. Laid to Rest Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery Wancourt France.

STEWART John Charles Miller Second Lieutenant 25th Squadron Royal Flying Corps 2/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA Aged 24 03/07/1916. Born 10/12/1891 Leeds. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ann 1911 Lovell House 97 North Street Occupation Student. John was killed alongside 18 year old Second Lieutenant Rex Sherwell of the Lincolnshire Regiment they lay  at rest next to each other Lapugnoy Military Cemetery France.

SKELTON Frank Second Lieutenant 28th Squadron KIA 21/10/1917 Aged 19. Born 1899.  Son of William and Fanny CWGC Adare Roundhay. 

Laid to Rest Mendinghem Military Cemetery Belgium.

STROSS David 2nd Lieutenant Royal Flying Corps East Lancashire Royal Field Artillery Died 12/03/1917 Aged 25. Born 25/12/1892 Pabjanice Poland. Son of Samuel and Celia Sarah Herzkowicz  Husband of Gertrude May Cohen Married London 1915. CWGC 21 Aberdaire Gardens West Hampstead London. Pilots liscence 30/01/1917 Catterick. Killed whilst delivering a RE8 when it spun and crashed at Tannery Farm Coventry. Laid to Rest Gelderd Road Hebrew Cemetery Leeds. 

WESTMORELAND Ernest 2nd Lieutenant 80th Squadron Royal Flying Corps DOW 19/02/1918 Aged 18. Born 15/03/1899 Rose and Crown Public House New Wortley Baptised St Bartholomew's Armley Son of John Thomas and Susannah Bradshaw 1911 at School Prospect House Stanningley Road Armley. Enlisted into RFC 3rd Airman 76724 gaining his commission 08/08/1917. Originally laid to rest in trench grave by the Germans. He was identified by the position of the crosses and he was between four other men there were no other means of identification. Finally Laid to Rest 1921 Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery Fleurbaix France.

WHITAKER William Second Lieutenant 23rd Squadron KIA 06/12/1917 Aged 19. Born 04/08/1898 Leeds. Son of John and Annie Isabella Lansley Married Gloucester 1897. CWGC Woodlands Old Lane Beeston. Pilots Liscence 08/06/1916. At Ruffy-Bauman School Hendon flying a Caudron Plane.

WHITELEY John Walker Airman 1st Class 12th Squadron KIA 23/08/1918 Aged 19. Born Leeds 08/06/1898 Baptised St Peters Church Leeds Parish Church 14/08/1898. Son of John and Mary Lucy walker Married Leeds Registered Building 1893.  Mary remmaried to Albert Hollings at St Bartholomew Armley in 1920. CWGC 54 Fitzarthur Street  Armley.

Under Graduate Leeds University Science (Engineering). Originally enlisted Northumberland Fusiliers 2nd Lieutenant. Pilots Liscence 10/01/1917 Catterick Bridge flying a Maurice Farman Biplane.
