Church of St John the Evangelist can be found in New Briggate. The memorial remembers 37 men from the parish. In 1919 the vicar of St Johns asked parishioners for names of their loved ones to be placed on the memorial. The memorial was dedicated and unveiled on Wednesday the 28th September 1921. 

A free event entitled making the memorial can be found at St Johns between 02/07/16 until 30/06/17 giving details through letters sent to the church of those who gave their lives remembered on the memorial

CUNDALL W Lance Corporal. A Private from Leeds died at home 1917. Only Lance Corporal on record was from Leicester Can You Help Regiment needed.

DARBY John Sprake Captain 4th Bn Royal Berkshire Regiment KIA 28/03/1918 Aged 27. Born 1890. Son of William Sugden Born Leeds Died 1904 and Annie Maria Knowles Married Reading 1889. CWGC 2 Lynton Villas New Road Windsor.  John worked on the Railway. Landed France 30/03/1915. John was a Serjeant in same regiment 382 before promotion.

Laid to Rest in the Family grave at Leeds General Cemetery Woodhouse when Leeds University was extended the built over the Graveyard hence William is remembered  on a Alternative Commemoration Lawnswood Cemetery.

Son of James Pickersgill chocolate maker and Emily Grant Married 1894 Emmanuel Leeds CWGC 9 Camden Terrace. In 1919 the Vicar of St Johns asked parishioners for names of their loved ones who had gave their lives in WW1 so they could be placed on the memorial. Normans father sent the following:

FURNISS James Private a choice of two 36596 and 19985 James was baptised at St John the Evangelist 13/08/1882 son of Samuel and Louisa Ann Watkin Married 1880 St Matthew Little London. Husband of Amelia Holroyd Married 1903. 1911 No 80 Carlton Street Camp Road Occupation Bricklayer. James lost his life either aged 35, 09/10/1917 or 36, 23/10/1918.

KITSON Henry Bywater Private (Rifleman) 8807 11th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps DOW 30/11/1917 Aged. Born Leeds Son of Enlisted Bradford. Remembered Cambrai Memorial Louverval France.

MAUNDRILL Wilfred Halton Private 21947 3rd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment DIED Sickness 01/09/1919 Aged 30. Born Otley. Son of James and Jane Hopton Married 1885 St Peter Leeds. Enlisted 11/12/1915 Bridlington.  Residence 98 Couberg Street. Cookridge Street. Landed France 03/06/1916. On the 23/08/1916 reports of a gun shot wound to his upper arm then on the 11/05/1918 Gun Shot Wound to the Thigh. Personal effects sent back to his father in 1920 were a silver cigarette case and  a letter. CWGC states Twice Wounded. Died Curragh Military Hospital Ireland. Below is the telegram found in Wilfred's service record sent to his family informing them of his passing.

Only Son of Harry Guilford and Alice Elizabeth Harrison Married Lawkholme 1891. 1911 Hill Top Farm Bingley Occupation Cowman on Farm. When Harry was Killed they lived at 5 Coronation Street Leeds.

SCHOLES Frederick Walter Second Lieutenant 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 03/05/1917 Aged 28. Son of Francis and Mary Ann Stirk Married 1870 St Peters Leeds. Husband of Annie Silk Married 1917 St Matthew Little London. Enlisted Leeds September 194 at Leeds Town Hall rank of Serjeant service number 15/790. Landed Egypt 22/12/1915. Citation for a Distinguished Conduct Medal found in the London Gazette 13/02/1917 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He rendered most valuable assistance in reorganising the battalion after the attack. He has performed consistent good work throughout".

STEWART John Charles Miller Second Lieutenant 25th Squadron Royal Flying Corps KIA 03/07/1916 Aged 24 . Born 10/12/1891 Leeds. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ann 1911 Lovell House 97 North Street Occupation Student. Joined the RFC from the 2/7th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment. John was killed alongside 18 year old Second Lieutenant Rex Sherwell of the Lincolnshire Regiment they lay at rest next to each other Lapugnoy Military Cemetery France.

VARTY William Edward Bombardier 283087 15th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery DOW 30/09/1917 Aged 27. Son of Tom and Mary Hannah Ellis Married 1889 St John The Evangelist 1911 No 16 Bexley Mount Bayswater Road Harehills Occupation Bespoke Tailor. Husband  Annie Elizabeth Dewis Married 25/03/1911 Holy Trinity Batley Carr. Annie remarried in 1925 to Ernest Dixon. The clearing station log book details that William had a Compound Fracture of the Thigh and he passed away at 13.20 and was laid to rest on the same day. Below is a photo of the Verity family William Edward is stood in the middle next to his father Tom and Brother Ernest.
