The Following section remembers those Girls from the City of Leeds who gave their lives in the service of their country in World War One whilst working at the Barnbow ordinance factory Their deaths were not mentioned at the time due to government restrictions and only their family's were aware of their sacrifice. This page hopefully will honour and give them the credit and respect they truly deserve.

BAINBRIDGE Catherine Vol 9c Page 1096 Aged 40. Wife of  William Bainbridge. William was a Rifleman 3793 3/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment, at the time of Catherine's death he was a patient at St James Hospital (East Leeds War Hospital) in his record it states the following on 06/12/1916  "Very hard case! His wife was killed last night at Barnbow explosion and he has 4 children - eldest 9" William  22/02/1918 Aged 48.

JACKSON Ethel Agnes ILS Inspector Aged 21. Born 1896 Baptised  18/02/1896.St Marys Whitkirk. Daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Married 1895 St Marks Whitkirk. In 1911 Ethel resided at Dr Barnardo's Girls Village Homes Barkingside Ilford Essex  Occupation Needlework. Remembered Roll of Honour Colton Methodist Church.

KEYWORTH Emmie ILS Inspector Aged  27 Vol 9c Page 1094.  Born 21/11/1889 Baptised St Michaels Headingley. Daughter of Thomas and Sarah Eliza Malthouse Married 1883 Leeds Registry Office. 1911 Residing 7 GranbyAvenue Dressmaker's Assistant. 1916 family were resding at 7 South View Terrace Bennett Road Headingley. Her Brother Joseph was Killed in Action 09/10/1917 Aged 21.

REID Gertrude (Nee Mitchell) Vol 9c Page 1096 Aged 36. Wife of Squire Reed Married 1906 St SAidens Harehills 1911 residence 26 Conway Place Harehills Road.

ROWLEY Maria Evelyn Vol 9c Page 1095 Aged 19. Daughter of Frederick Ernest and Maria Maud 1911 Residence 4 Victoria Place St Saviors Road Bath. 

SCHOFIELD Mary Amelia Vol 9c Page 1095 Aged 42?  Daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Thompson. 1911 resident at 48 Potternewton Lane Occupation Charwomen.

STEWART Amelia (Nee TATE) Vol 9b Page 549 Aged 39. Husband of Arthur Married 1898 St Mary of Bethany Wortley. Resident 1911 1 All Saints Street York Road they had five children.

SYKES Edith DIED Vol 9b Page 544 Aged  17. Born Yeadon 1899. Daughter of William Oldfiield and Alice Padgett Married 1892 Churwell. 1911 Residence 2 Hardrow Terrace Oldfield Lane Wortley.

WORSLOP Ida DIED  I cannot find any death record for a girl of this name, indeed no record of an Ida or Ada Worslop on any birth marriage or death record.. Interestingly in the Tadcaster Death register for December 1916 Vol 9c Page 1098 Female Unknown ? very unusual for the death registers, could it be no roll call of who was working was kept ?  and a random name was given ?


BOWKETT (HODGKINS) Florence Augustine Ruth DIED in an Explosion at Barnbow Ammunition Factory Cross Gates Leeds on the 17/03/1917 Aged 31. alongside Elsie Bruce.  Born 1885 Stoke Damerel Devon. Baptised 11/09/1889 Walworth Lady Margaret Church Southwark London. Daughter of  Henry and Harriett Augustine Maintenant Born Paris France they Married at St Saviour Southwark London 1884. In 1917 they resided at 30 Hill Top Mount Roundhay Road.  Married James Hodgkins Aston Birmingham  in 1903. 1911 Residence 175 Stonedale Terrace Snydale Road Normanton. James remarried in 1918 to Kitty Axup All Saints Normanton. When the family gave details for the Australian Roll of Honour for her brother John Henry it mentions that his sister was killed in the explosion at Barnbow. Florence is remembered along with her brother on the War Memorial found at St Aidens Harehills.


MAYNE  (Nee SADLER) GERTRUDE Worker 27339 Queen Marys Army Auxiliary Corps DIED 08/04/1918 Aged 29. Daughter of John Thomas and Elizabeth Sadler  CWGC 14 Strawberry Place Armley. Wife of  George William MAYNE Corporal 3484 2/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 20/02/1917 Aged 30 . They Married in 1910 at Armley St Bartholomew. Resident in 1911 at 24 Middle Cross Street Armley. Laid to Rest Armley Cemetery Leeds.
