Remembering those from Leeds who gave their lives in world war one.

The following page remembers the 44 men who worked for Leeds City Councils Education Department before and during World War One as Teachers and Headmasters. Many of the men mentioned below were not originally from the City and when they gave their lives some are recorded as living in other parts of the country. The Memorial can today be found in the City's  Council Offices in George Street Leeds.

Dedicated and unveiled Monday 23rd October 1922 by the Lord Mayor Mr W Hodgson at Leeds Town Hall. Schools in the City were closed at 15.00 Hrs for teachers to attend and it was reported the Town Hall was filled to capacity. The memorial was designed by Captain T H Edwin Abbot Mr H Ernest Simpson and Mr Leonard Rodgers all all staff at the Leeds School of Art.

Son of Thomas and Alice Glover Married Prescott. Husband of Marie M McCaffrey Married 02/06/1914 St Josephs Hunslet CWGC 19 Longroyd Terrace Burton Road. Enlisted 01/05/1915 Leeds occupation School Teacher. Private 14/24521 Manchester Regiment. Promoted through ranks rapidly. Landed France 25/08/1916. Commissioned 08/12/1916. Inscription: I have Fought a Good Fight, I Have Finished My Course, I Have Kept The Faith. Laid to Rest Manchester Cemetery Riencourt-Les-Bapaume France.

BARON William 2nd Lieutenant Royal Garrison Artillery KIA Aged 32.  Born 1886 Lancashire Ince in Makerfield Wigan. Son of Mathew and Lucy M CWGC of Heathfield Gathurst Wigan. Williams  Residence 1911 12 Linden Road Hunslet Assistant School Master. Laid to Rest Zydcoote Military Cemetery Belgium.

BEDNALL John Godfrey Wilfred Aged 19 Son of George and Clara 29 Chandos Terrace Roundhay.

BEST Thomas Edward Corporal 17/1565 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 12/04/1918 Aged 35.

BLACKBURN Ernest Rifleman R/25080 9th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps KIA 15/09/1916 Aged 31. Born Wakefield 1884. Son of James and Eliza CWGC 68A Westgate Dewsbury. BLAKEY James Henry Leading Seaman Tyneside Z/1492 Anson Bn Royal Naval Volunteer Force 26/10/1917 Aged 20. Born Sunderland. Son of Henry and Mary Shotton CWGC 33 Coperfield Grove Cross Green Lane. 1911 Teaching Student. Remembered Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium. Royal Navy Records show James lost his life 01/06/1916 J.49849 HMS Tipperary Lost in Battle of Jutland Laid to Rest Military Cemetery, Fredriksstad, Norway. Mother Mary at Address given above.

Son of John Henry and Grace Coates Married 1890 All Saints Leeds CWGC Wath Pateley Bridge.  Enlisted Leeds Town Hall 1914 Service Number 211 15th Bn Leeds Pals West Yorkshire Regiment. 1911 4 Clarendon Road Headingley Occupation Clerk in Education Department. Laid to Rest Serre Road Cemetery No 3 Puisieux Somme France.

COUSIN Samuel Serjeant 2585 8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment DIED 16/03/1915 Aged 45. Born 1871 Arthington.  Husband of Edith Asquith Married 1896 St Marks Woodhouse 1911 Gymnastic Instructor Leeds Education Committee 11 Cross Street Halton. Remembered Lawnswood Cemetery Leeds.

CROSSLEY Stanley Private 56235 141st Field Ambulance R.A.M.C KIA 20/08/1916 Aged 32. Born Roundhay 1884. Son  of Thomas (Occupation School Caretaker) and Ann Richardson Married Weslyn Church LeedsHusband of Maud Booth Married 1904 Chapel Allerton Methodist Church. 1911 14 Church Lane Chapel Allerton Basketmaker. Enlisted Leeds 25/02/1915. Landed France 11/08/1915. Laid to Rest Flatiron Copse Cemetery Mamtze France. 

DUCKETT John Edward Rifleman C/12355 21st Bn Kings Royal Rifle Corps DOW 02/01/1917 Aged 30. Born 1886 Farnley. Son of Willoiam and Ann Stephenson Married 1867 St Michael Farnley. Husband of Eva Adelaide Crossley Married 1915 Bramley and Holbeck District Registry Building. I believe Eva remarried in 1925. Residence 1911 64 Cow Close Road Lower Wortley School Teacher Elementary School. Enlisted Leeds 20/11/1915. Landed France 05/05/1916. Suffered a Gun Shot Wound 12/10/1916. Passed away at Fort Pit Military Hospital Chatham. Laid to Rest Farnley Cemetery.

FIELDING Ernest (Thomas Edward) Private 39102 13th Bn Manchester Regiment DOW 12/01/1917 Aged 39. Enlisted Leeds 29/11/1915 West Yorkshire Regiment 34776. Residence 10 Amelia Terrace Carlton Hill. Husband of Margaret Jane Dorrant Married 1902  1911 23 St Marks Street Woodhouse Lane. Landed Salonika 1916. I believe this to be Edward a School Caretaker for Leeds City Council in 1911.He is the only Fielding who gave his life in W1 that has a connection to Leeds and the Education Authority. Laid to Rest Karasouli Military Cemetery Greece.

HALL Miles Arthur 2nd Lieutenant 150th Company Machine Gun Corps 23/04/1917 Aged 31. Enlisted Private London Regiment. Landed France 14/02/1917. Assistant School Master in 1911. CWGC States Brother of John Henry Hall 8 Parliament Street New Brighton Morley.  Remembered Arras Memorial

JACKSON Ernest 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Bn Attached 15th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 23. LEEDS MODERN: 1913-1915 Modern Language Master. Ernest was teacher and Assistant Headmaster at Tynemouth Municipal High School until 1913 when he arrived at Leeds Modern to the Post of Modern Language Master. Ernest enlisted into the Rifle Brigade in April 1915 and in June 1915 was granted a commission into the 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers. Husband of Lillian M Tunnicliffe Married 1915 St Aidens Leeds. Posted to France in January 1916. Remembered Leeds Boys Modern.

KIRK Alfred Edward Morgan Lance Corporal 15/557 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 22. LEEDS MODERN: 1908-1910. Born Forest Gate London. Son of Alfred a Railway Building Contractors Agent and Mary R Born Ireland 1868 CWGC Woodvale Ashley New Mikon Hampshire. After leaving Leeds Boys Modern Alfred worked for the Leeds City Education Committee. Enlisted September 1914 Leeds Town Hall. Remembered Leeds Boys Modern.

McCUBBIN Percy Griffith 2nd Lieutenant 7th Bn Rifle Brigade KIA 23/04/1918 Aged 25. Born 1893 Edinburgh. Son of John D S and Katherine Thom Reed 1911 Wallsend Unscerlificated Assistant School Teacher Wallsend Education Council. Remembered Pozieres Memorial France.

MILNE Douglas Thwaite Captain 4th Bn attached 7th Bn Queens Own Cameron Highlanders DOW 28/03/1918 Aged 22. LEEDS MODERN: 1904-1911. Born Birkenhead Cheshire. Enlisted Leeds. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Mary CWGC 11 Hall Lane Chapeltown. Left Leeds Boys Modern to work in the Leeds Education Committee, and in September 1914 he went to Leeds Town Hall and joined the 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Leeds Pals. In June 1915 Douglas was granted a commission in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, during this time Douglas was the Brigade Physical Instructor. Was sent to France and then Belgium with the 7th Cameron's and fought around Ieper's  being promoted to Captain. Douglas was reported missing in the March of 1918 at Arras, which was confirmed in the November of that year. (Army's Those Who Died Records a comment is placed on Douglas's record that he Died of Wounds in German Hands.)  Remembered Leeds Boys Modern.

MOSSOP Mathew Hudson Serjeant 15/1027 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 01/07/1916 Aged 26.Military Medal. Born Seascale Whitehaven. Son of Isaac and Jane Russell. 1911 Residence School Teacher 7 Glebe Road Cleethorpes Laid to Rest Serre Road Cemetery Somme France.

TEALE Nathan Douglas Private 14948 No.3 Company 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards 14/09/1916 Aged 22. LEEDS MODERN: 1906-1911. Son of Thomas and Jane Married 1883. Nathan left Leeds Boys Modern to train as a teacher in 1911. In July 1914 Nathan was appointed Assistant Headmaster at St Hilda's School Cross Green Leeds (My first infants school that I attended in the early 1960's). He enlisted later that year joining the 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards Training at Caterham and Windsor before being posted to France in December 1915. Nathan was involved in the Battle for Albert on the Somme and was reported missing near Ginchy between the 14-16 July 1916, Nathan was found later that year where he fell and laid to rest in the Guard's' Burial Ground in the East side of the village of Ginchy alongside 20 other officers and men of the Guards Division, then moved to The Guards Cemetery at Lesboeufs after the war. Remembered Leeds Boys Modern.

 TOOKE Bernard Captain 18th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Bradford Pals 03/05/1917 Aged 28. LEEDS MODERN: 1904-1907. Born Leeds. Eldest son of William Oldham  and Jane Ann France Married 1886 Leeds. Bernard left Leeds Boys Modern to attend Bradford Grammar school after achieving a governors scholarship, and went on to attend Oxford University and came back to Leeds to work for the Leeds Education Committee.
