As the long recovery continues for Ruth, the skin-and-bones dog found feeding from the carcass of another dog in a vacant Salem County house last month, prosecutors have identified the former owner of the dogs and charged her with animal cruelty offenses, authorities said Tuesday.
All charges are disorderly persons offenses that fall under animal cruelty. It is unclear how long the animals were in the house, but by the time officials found them, Ruth was feeding off the other dog, who had died.
Ruth was taken in by the Salem County Humane Society, Workinng volunteers are caring for the severely underweight and sick dog. She weighed 29 pounds when she was found, and has tested positive for Lyme disease. In the meantime, the Salem County Humane Society is asking for donations for her care.
